Wellness Care/Checkups

Your pet deserves the best in veterinary care in Tampa. Our staff is dedicated to providing, not just emergency care, but ongoing wellness for your family pet.

Your pet needs consistent, regular professional medical attention throughout their lives. Veterinary annual wellness checkups enable you to help ensure that your pet receives the proper diagnostic, examination and preventative treatments necessary to ensure optimal health.

South Tampa Veterinary Care highly recommends pet insurance for accidents an illnesses. Check out https://www.pawlicy.com/ to compare companies and coverages. The average ER visit is $1500 and can go up to $7000 or more for intestinal foreign bodies that require surgery. Knee surgery for a torn cruciate ranges from $1800-7000. Just like any insurance, you hate to pay the premium until you need it.

Annual Wellness Checkups

Cat with doctor getting examined

Here’s what you can expect when your pet gets their annual wellness checkup. Your pet will be escorted by a veterinary nurse technician to be weighed, take the history related to the visit, take any lab samples needed and fill any prescription medications. The doctor will then perform a physical examination to address any problems such as growths, infections, areas of pain or discomfort or mobility issues.

During the visit, you’ll discuss your pet’s health at home, and you’ll have the opportunity to convey anything that may be concerning you, such as changes in behavior or appetite, drinking and urinating, or anything else that’s changed since the last visit. Your vet will also ask you specific questions in order to highlight common potential issues, as well as to get a better sense of the animal’s lifestyle at home.

Next, your pet’s file will be reviewed, to ensure that all  treatments are brought up to date.

These include:

  • Vaccinations
  • Heartworm and flea preventive treatments
  • Prophylactic deworming for hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms

Wellness Services

Annual wellness check ups provide the chance for your pet to receive diagnostic procedures and treatment in a wide range of service areas.

Additional services that may be conducted include:

  • Microchipping
  • Dental examination and treatment recommendations
  • Spaying/neutering information and scheduling
  • Blood test monitoring for thyroid and arthritis medication refills as well as geriatric kidney disease screening
  • Heartworm testing is performed at every annual wellness checkup
  • FeLV/FIV testing for new kittens or cats going into households with existing cats

Wellness Checkups for Special Situations

Consistent wellness checkups every 3-6  months are also crucial for pets that fall into special categories, such as geriatric and pediatric pets.

Senior Pet Care

Older pets over 10 years old (7 years old for larger breed dogs) often develop a range of age-related issues, such as kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid issues, inflammatory bowel disease, glaucoma and arthritis.  Veterinary wellness checkups support the healthy aging of your beloved pet to help ensure quality of life for as long as possible.

Puppy and Kitten Care

STVC recommends puppy and kitten examinations at 8, 12 and 16 weeks old for vaccinations and developmental checkups. Early wellness exams can reveal health conditions you should be aware of, as well as, to build a baseline of health that can be used throughout your new pet’s life. In addition, if you’re a new pet owner, you can receive valuable advice and tips on caring for your young pet, such as pet insurance, tooth brushing techniques and parasite control.

These are just some of the many services and treatment options available during routine veterinary wellness checkups at South Tampa Veterinary Care. We are dedicated to providing the most advanced care for your pet in Tampa, and we can’t wait to be a part of your pet's whole life health!
